About Francois
I’m a Tasmanian-based landscape photographer drawn to wild places, quiet moments, and time spent in the field.
Born and raised in South Africa, my love for photography and travel started early. At 18, I set off on a decade-long journey around the world, camera in hand, learning to slow down, observe, and respond to light and place. After returning home, I spent several years working as an adventure tour guide, leading small groups through Southern Africa’s remote landscapes – an experience that deeply shaped how I see and move through the natural world.
Since settling in Tasmania in 2003, I’ve balanced a career in IT with an ongoing pursuit of landscape photography. Whether hiking into the mountains, working in dense forests, standing beneath dark skies, or waiting out difficult weather, my work is guided by patience and a deep respect for the environments I photograph.
I have a particular passion for low-light photography, night skies, and places that are rarely seen. Over the years, this has led to work in astrophotography, cave photography, and timelapse cinematography – including Tumultuous Tasmania, a film created from over 65,000 individual frames that explores the island’s raw and changing moods.
I enjoy teaching photography just as much as practising it. Sharing time in the field – helping others slow down, see more clearly, and connect more deeply with the places they photograph – is a natural extension of my own creative process.
